Reflecting on the Global Impact of the Pandemic: A Four-Year Perspective

I'm posting  in light of a pretty significant anniversary that is relevant to us and also to the whole planet. Four years ago, the world was confronted with a challenge unlike any other in recent history—the declaration of a global pandemic. As we mark this significant anniversary, it's a time for reflection, learning, and looking forward with hope.

The pandemic brought unprecedented changes to our lives. It tested our resilience, ability to adapt, and compassion for one another. Amidst the trauma, we witnessed remarkable acts of kindness, innovation, and solidarity. Here's to honouring lives lost and the sacrifices made by so many.

The past four years have taught us invaluable lessons about the importance of preparedness, the power of research, and the strength of community. A big one to come out of the pandemic is rediscovering the benefits of prioritising health and wellness, both physically and mentally.

The Ongoing Journey: Navigating Post-Pandemic Life and Mental Health

It's weird. For some people, the pandemic is a thing of the past, a 'blip' on the horizon of times past. Yet, for others, it still has relevance. I don't know about you, but I'm still affected mentally. The impact lingers. I recall attending a weekend training in 2021 and feeling very anxious about removing my mask. That very next week, there were more lockdowns.

And it's still here. People are still dying from COVID-19, nursing homes are still going into lockdown, the virus is still in circulation, and no doubt will be for years to come. Many people are living with the effects of Long Covid. Thankfully, however, the situation is vastly different from what it once was. If you are still impacted, I trust you are getting the support you need.

From Darkness to Hope: Documenting the Pandemic's Legacy through Film

Back then, I made three short films to mark the pandemic declaration's one-year anniversary. It's strange watching them again- a palpable sense of despair and gloom is still evoked. And I recall the global shift when people began to smile again as we adjusted to our ''new normal'' We emerged from what was like a dungeon of darkness into the light of hope and promise.

Yet, when I watch the third in the trilogy, I see how far we have come. I think of that time of emergence as a tentative, fragile foray into a new world. Now, for the most part, things are back to what they were before. How much have we really learned? There have been invaluable lessons, but there's a weird return to habitual ways of thinking after a crisis. That is not always a bad thing. But it is certainly interesting to observe.

You can check out or revisit my short films via the clip, or click on the links below. The clip below is the first in the series. They are designed to be viewed sequentially. And of course, if you are triggered by reference to the pandemic, then please use discretion.
